Mandala madness..

Updated: Sep 20, 2019

Grade 3's are looking at geometric shapes in Maths this semester so I thought a great way to connect to Maths lessons would be to delve into mandala designs. We looked at mandalas from different cultures and countries throughout history and discussed their significance. Students created a 'mandala checklist' to identify how to create a successful design and the key words they choose to look at were; balance, symmetry and pattern.

Over a 6 week unit of work we experimented with a variety of materials and processes. A student favorite was creating colored sand mandalas based on Tibetan designs and making mandala mobiles out of graph paper and card.

Collaborative lessons worked best as students worked in pairs to decide designs and materials. We looked at artist Andy Goldsworthy before venturing outside to make mandalas out of man made and natural materials. There was a discussion about how Goldsworthy made his work entirely out of nature and some students wanted to take the challenge and have the same approach, others wanted to incorporate both. Students took turns in the roles of 'collector' and 'designer' and a time limit was set to make sure everyone had enough time to finish their designs.

All in all it was an interesting way to engage students who are avid Math fans and a chance to solidify classroom learning and show off once again that art really is everywhere!!
